Recommended spam filtering settings

There are various recommended set-ups depending upon whether you want to be able to easily view suspect spam at a glance or whether you simply want everything blocked, including emails which the system isn’t sure about.

NB Viruses and blocked files are always sent to the quarantine regardless of spam filtering settings.

Reject everything, including suspect emails

This will result in everything considered spam, even suspect emails being rejected. The sender will receive a bounce saying that their email is rejected. This will involve the least amount of unwanted emails and the least amount of time for your email administrator as they will not need to spend time checking quarantine settings.

Reject spam, forward suspect spam to the users

This will result in anything considered spam being rejected, but suspect spam will be tagged and the subject line altered and then forwarded to the user. Users email software can filter the emails into the users’ junk folders (see why emails don’t get automatically moved to the junk folder). The suspect emails can then be easily reviewed by users and important emails can simply be moved to the inbox without intervention by an administrator.

Reject spam, quarantine suspect spam on the server

This will result in anything considered spam being rejected, but suspect spam will be stored in a quarantine on the server. Your email administrator will receive a daily digest of quarantined items and will be able to release quarantined emails if required. This is slightly more work for your administrator, but does mean that important emails can be released if required.
